The Three Branches of Government

The Michigan Constitution establishes three branches of government: the executive branch, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch. The executive branch is headed by the governor, who is elected to a four-year term. The legislative branch is composed of the Michigan Senate and the Michigan House of Representatives. Each senator serves a four-year term, and each representative serves a two-year term. The judicial branch is composed of the Michigan Supreme Court, the Michigan Court of Appeals, and the Michigan circuit courts.

The Rights of Citizens

The Michigan Constitution guarantees a number of rights to citizens, including the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, the right to vote, and the right to due process of law. The constitution also prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sex, or national origin.

The Structure of the Courts

The Michigan Constitution establishes a three-tiered court system. The Michigan Supreme Court is the highest court in the state. The Michigan Court of Appeals is the intermediate appellate court. The Michigan circuit courts are the trial courts of general jurisdiction.

Amendments to the Constitution

The Michigan Constitution has been amended several times since it was adopted in 1963. The most recent amendments were adopted in 2018. These amendments included a number of changes to the constitution, including the creation of a new independent redistricting commission, the establishment of a new term limits law for state legislators, and the expansion of voting rights for military and overseas voters.

The Constitution of the State of Michigan is a living document that has been amended several times over the years to reflect the changing needs of the state. It is a document that guarantees the rights of citizens, establishes the framework for the state government, and ensures that the government is accountable to the people.
