The Mary Celeste was a brigantine, a type of sailing ship with two masts. She was built in 1861 in Spencer's Island, Nova Scotia. The ship was 103 feet long and weighed 282 tons. She was owned by a group of American investors and was captained by Benjamin Briggs.
On November 7, 1872, the Mary Celeste left New York City bound for Genoa, Italy. The ship was carrying a cargo of 1,701 barrels of alcohol. On December 4, 1872, the Mary Celeste was found adrift by the crew of the British merchant ship Dei Gratia. The ship was in good condition, and her sails were set. However, there was no one on board.
The Dei Gratia took the Mary Celeste in tow and sailed her to Gibraltar. When the ship arrived in Gibraltar, the authorities began an investigation into the disappearance of the crew. The investigation revealed that the Mary Celeste had been abandoned in a hurry. The crew's personal belongings were still on board, and the ship's logbook was up to date. However, there was no sign of any struggle or violence.
The mystery of the Mary Celeste has never been solved. There are many theories about what happened to the crew, but none of them have been proven. Some people believe that the crew was abducted by aliens. Others believe that the crew was killed by pirates. Still others believe that the crew abandoned the ship due to a storm or other emergency.
The Mary Celeste remains one of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries in history. The ship and her crew have been featured in books, movies, and television shows. The mystery of the Mary Celeste continues to captivate people today, and it is likely to remain a mystery for many years to come.
