The Lives and Executions of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette: A Tale of Revolution and Tragedy
The Rise and Fall of King Louis XVI
Louis XVI was born on August 23, 1754, at the Palace of Versailles. He was the third son of Louis XV and Marie Josèphe of Saxony. Louis was not expected to become king, but the deaths of his older brothers left him as the heir to the throne. In 1774, Louis married Marie Antoinette, Archduchess of Austria. The marriage was arranged by Marie Antoinette's mother, Empress Maria Theresa, in an attempt to strengthen the alliance between France and Austria.

Louis XVI was a weak and indecisive ruler. He was not interested in politics and preferred to spend his time hunting and playing cards. As a result, he left the running of the government to his ministers. This led to a great deal of corruption and inefficiency.
The French people were increasingly unhappy with the monarchy. They were burdened by high taxes and food shortages. In 1789, the people of Paris stormed the Bastille prison, which was a symbol of royal tyranny. This event marked the beginning of the French Revolution.
Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were captured by the revolutionaries and imprisoned in the Temple Tower. On January 21, 1793, Louis XVI was executed by guillotine. Marie Antoinette was executed on October 16, 1793.
The Execution of King Louis XVI
The execution of Louis XVI was a major turning point in the French Revolution. It was the first time that a king had been executed by his own people. The execution sent shockwaves throughout Europe and led to the outbreak of the War of the First Coalition.
The execution of Louis XVI was carried out on the Place de la Révolution, which is now known as the Place de la Concorde. Louis was taken to the guillotine in a cart, wearing a white shirt and a red cap. He was accompanied by his confessor, Father Edgeworth de Firmont.
Louis ascended the scaffold and stood in front of the guillotine. He made a brief speech, saying that he forgave his enemies and that he hoped that his death would bring peace to France. Louis then placed his head on the block and the guillotine blade fell.

Marie Antoinette then placed her head on the block and the guillotine blade fell.
