Early Life and Education

George Wythe was born in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, on May 3, 1726. His father, Thomas Wythe, was a wealthy planter and merchant. His mother, Elizabeth Taliaferro Wythe, died when George was young. George was raised by his father and his stepmother, Anne Payne Wythe.

Wythe received his early education at home from a tutor. He then attended the College of William and Mary, where he studied law. After graduating from college, Wythe returned to Elizabeth City County and began practicing law.

Political Career

Wythe's political career began in 1754, when he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. He served in the House of Burgesses for several years and became a leading voice for the rights of the colonists.

In 1774, Wythe was elected to the Continental Congress. He served in the Continental Congress for several years and played a key role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. Wythe was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the United States.

In 1776, Wythe was elected to the Virginia Convention. He served in the Virginia Convention for several years and played a key role in the drafting of the Virginia Constitution. Wythe is considered to be one of the authors of the Virginia Constitution.

In 1779, Wythe was elected the first governor of Virginia. He served as governor for three years and oversaw the establishment of the new state government. Wythe is considered to be one of the most successful governors of Virginia.

Later Life and Legacy

After his term as governor, Wythe returned to practicing law. He also served as a professor of law at the College of William and Mary. Wythe was a mentor to Thomas Jefferson and other future leaders of the country.

Wythe died in Richmond, Virginia, on June 8, 1806. He is buried in the churchyard of St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond.
