An Illustrated Journey into Ancient History
In the annals of ancient history, the name Romulus stands tall as the legendary founder of Rome, a city destined to become the cradle of a mighty civilization. His story, steeped in myth and shrouded in mystery, has captivated imaginations for centuries.
Through the vivid illustrations and engaging narrative of acclaimed author Jacob Abbott, we delve into the fascinating world of Romulus. From his humble beginnings to his triumphant reign as the first king of Rome, this illustrated tale transports us back to the very foundations of Western civilization.
The Twins Reared by Wolves
The tale of Romulus and his twin brother, Remus, begins with their miraculous birth. Their mother, Rhea Silvia, was a Vestal Virgin destined to remain chaste. However, the god Mars intervened, and she gave birth to twin sons.
To conceal her forbidden act, Rhea Silvia ordered the twins to be cast into the Tiber River. But the river god, Tiberinus, took pity on the infants and carried them to safety. They were discovered by a she-wolf, who suckled and raised them in her lair.
The Founding of Rome
As the twins grew, they became strong and skilled. One day, they encountered a group of shepherds who had stolen their cattle. A fierce battle ensued, and Romulus emerged victorious.
Inspired by their triumph, Romulus and Remus decided to establish a new city on the site of their victory. However, they disagreed on the exact location. Romulus wished to build on the Palatine Hill, while Remus preferred the Aventine Hill.
The Fratricidal Struggle
To settle the dispute, they agreed to consult the gods through augury. Remus saw six vultures, while Romulus saw twelve. The latter claimed victory and began building his city on the Palatine Hill.
But their rivalry turned deadly when Remus mocked Romulus's low fortifications. Enraged, Romulus hurled a javelin at his brother, killing him instantly. The city of Rome was thus founded on the blood of its founder's twin.
The Reign of Romulus
As the first king of Rome, Romulus established laws, organized the government, and defended the city against its enemies. He formed the Roman army, consisting of legions of citizen-soldiers, and secured alliances with neighboring tribes.
Under Romulus's leadership, Rome grew and prospered. He conquered nearby territories, expanded the city's boundaries, and laid the foundations for a vast and powerful empire.
The Mysterious Disappearance
After a reign of 37 years, Romulus mysteriously disappeared. According to legend, he was reviewing his troops on the Campus Martius when a sudden storm broke out.
As the clouds parted, Romulus was nowhere to be found. Some believed he had been taken up to heaven by his father, Mars. Others whispered that he had been assassinated by his political enemies.
The Legacy of Romulus
Despite his untimely demise, Romulus's legacy lived on. He became a legendary figure, revered as the father of the Roman people. The city he founded grew into a global empire, shaping the course of Western civilization for centuries to come.
Through Jacob Abbott's captivating illustrations and immersive storytelling, the story of Romulus continues to inspire and educate readers of all ages. It is a tale of adventure, ambition, and the indomitable spirit that gave birth to one of the greatest civilizations in history.
