The fight is best remembered for the "long count." After Dempsey knocked down Firpo, the referee started to count. However, Dempsey's manager, Jack Kearns, interfered with the count and gave Dempsey extra time to recover. Firpo protested, but the referee allowed the fight to continue.

Dempsey's victory was controversial, but it cemented his status as a boxing legend. The "long count" remains one of the most infamous incidents in boxing history.

Later Life

Dempsey lost his title to Gene Tunney in 1926. He retired from boxing in 1935 and became a successful businessman. Dempsey also appeared in several movies and television shows.

Dempsey died on May 31, 1983, at the age of 87. He is still remembered today as one of the greatest heavyweight boxing champions of all time.
